In his Description of Greece, the 2nd century AD Hellenistic geographer Pausanias described the temple of Zeus at Olympia. According to his account, a monumental ivory and gold sculpture of the Greek god rested onto a floor of black marble covered in oil. The dark-coloured marble, made shiny by the oil, created a stunning visual effect. On the one hand, it created the illusion of an abyss separating the sculpture from the viewers.
On the other, it made Zeus’s image more accessible, multiplying it endlessly on its mirror-like surface.
